Travel Award


The University of Missouri ASGSA Travel was established to assist Animal Sciences graduate students attend and participate in professional conferences pertaining to their field of study. Conference attendance plays a role in academic growth and development by providing the opportunity for training, networking, and exposure to the latest research. Financial support is limited and is distributed for student travel that is deemed to make the best use of this limited funding based on a combination of merit, financial need, and involvement.

Funding Amounts

Upon the conclusion of the application judging, awards will be distributed by the deciding committee. The amounts are subject to change each semester at the discretion of the ASGSA. The total monetary award amount will not exceed $2,000. These funds are to be used for the reimbursement of registration fees, air travel, lodging, or other expenses incurred during the professional meeting/conference.

Eligibility Requirement to Apply for Funds

-Meeting the eligibility requirements does not guarantee funding-

Funds are only distributed to ASGSA active or provisional members enrolled in a mater’s or doctoral graduate program of study. To be considered an active member in ASGSA, in the past 12 months one must:

  1. Present at Graduate Student Forum, Life Sciences Week, or another scientific
    meeting during the calendar year.
  2. Meetings may be equally substituted for attendance at additional fundraising, catering or
    ASGSA sponsored events (excluding social events)
  3. Attend a minimum of three (3) ASGSA meetings per semester
  4. Assist with at least four (4) hours per semester at a fundraising, catering, or other ASGSA sponsored event (excluding social events).
  5. Complete the Food Handler Safety class and receive a certificate.
    If awarded travel funds, students are only eligible to receive funding once per year
    One must formally present data at the chosen meeting in some fashion (poster, oral presentation,
    keynote speech, etc.)

Application Materials

The ASGSA travel fund application must be completed in full with the appropriate signatures. In addition to the application, students must provide a letter of recommendation from their major advisor. Furthermore, the abstract for the chosen meeting must be included. If the abstract has not yet been accepted, the submitted abstract will suffice. These materials must be submitted prior to the cycle’s deadline to the ASGSA chairperson in order to enter the judging pool.

Important Deadlines

The application, along with all other materials, must be submitted prior to the dates established below. Funding must be requested prior to conference attendance and will not be provided for meetings you have already attended.

* Travel cycle is determined by the date you leave for the activity. For example, if you leave on March 30 and return April 3, then you are eligible to apply for Cycle I (not Cycle II).
** Applications are due by 5 p.m. If the due date falls on a weekend or University Holiday, the deadline is extended to the following business day by 5 p.m.
