General Extension Focus
Research and extension efforts leading to more efficient utilization of
poultry feedstuffs to reduce phosphorus and nitrogen excretion in poultry manure has been a
major thrust of the poultry efforts within the Division. A well developed cooperative poultry
youth program with the state Department of Secondary Education, Agricultural Education
programs, the 4-H Youth Development staff, and with science curricula specialists in the state’s
primary education system has been developed. Small flock and alternative flock problems and
queries are addressed in cooperation with veterinarian consultation with the College of Veterinary
Medicine.
Food safety presentations have been developed in conjunction with the Missouri State
Veterinarians’ office for the quality production of poultry meat and eggs in the small or
alternative flock management setting. Additionally, educational programs have been and will be
developed to provide educational opportunities surrounding poultry issues which may have
potential for catastrophic losses to the entire poultry industry within Missouri or that have
significant zootomic potential.
