2017 Missouri Youth Grading and Judging Contest and Clinic
Trowbridge Livestock Center
University of Missouri
March 4, 2017
Sponsored by the University of Missouri Division of Animal Sciences
We are pleased to announce this year’s Missouri Livestock Judging and Grading Clinic, our 29th year at the University of Missouri! This year’s events, scheduled for Saturday, March 4, will continue the highly successful improvements initiated last year as well as the long-held traditions of Missouri judging. Co-sponsored and coordinated by the University of Missouri, the Missouri Department of Agriculture, and the Advisory Team, this is a great opportunity to support and develop Missouri’s youth involved in animal agriculture. All participants, from beginners to seasoned judgers, are sure to learn a lot, sharpen their skills, and enjoy networking and friendly competition.
The workshop is designed for 8th grade or younger. It will focus on active learning, working in small groups to learn more about livestock evaluation, spending time at eye-level with the livestock; understanding the importance of USDA grading of cattle; and even taking a field trip to Mizzou’s USDA inspected meat plant to learn about the end product. The workshop will be facilitated by Mizzou and the Missouri Department of Agriculture personnel. Scores will not be tabulated for the workshop. This will be a hands-on educational experience to expose the participants to the basics of judging and grading and the importance of both. Entries for the workshop will be limited to the first 400 on judging and placings and to the first 100 registrants for the clinic through the JudgingCard system. This system worked very well last year so we will be using it for the second time - if you have questions feel free to let us know.
This was another first from last year’s contest that worked so well we will continue it this year. You should also be prepared for one set of oral reasons and possible questions. And to better align this event with other 4-H and FFA events in the state, we will be using the JudgingCard registration and scoring system for this year’s Judging and Grading Clinic. There will be no “official” adult division, but we welcome any adults to view the contest from the stands.
