Career Opportunities

Poultry is the largest Agriculture enterprise in Missouri with almost $2 billion dollars in sales annually. The state industry employs around 13,000 full-time employees and approximately 10,000 more indirectly employed due to the poultry industry. The industry is characterized by large integrated firms that raise millions of birds yearly. These firms include Tyson Foods, Cargill, Carroll’s Foods, Willowbrook Foods, Ag Forte, George’s Poultry and Simmons Poultry. These firms maintain breeders, hatcheries, grow birds to market weight, process and further process the poultry.  They currently operate 27 processing and further processing facilities in the state. Additionally, Missouri has several large egg producers as well as egg products manufacturers. Qualified individuals are always in demand and needed to fill the jobs in the state as well as nationally.  Jobs include working as service technicians, with breeder flocks, feedmilling, processing plant, laboratory, human resources, hatchery management, quality control, etc. Individuals with advanced degrees (MS, PhD, DVM) in an area of poultry science are also in high demand.

Opportunities at the University of Missouri

MU maintains the largest poultry program in the state as well as the only public research facility. Hundreds of thousands of dollars are spent by industry groups to conduct research at MU each year. The Rocheford Poultry Farm and processing facilities house broilers, turkey and layers for both research and teaching needs. The farm also employs a number of undergraduate students who desire hands-on experience with poultry. Students may be trained in all aspects of poultry production, nutrition and processing.
