Career Opportunities

Missouri ranks number two in the nation in number of beef cows and the state is a top producers of seedstock for the beef industry.  The Division of Animal Sciences is the only comprehensive beef  program within the state that provides relevant research, teaching, and outreach programs with emphasis on ruminant nutrition, forage production and grazing systems, genetics/animal breeding, reproductive management, meat science, and production management.  The beef industry demands an increasing number of trained individuals who have hands-on beef production experience and can make science-based decisions.

Opportunities at the University of Missouri

The mission of the University of Missouri Beef Program is to serve the beef industry through research, teaching, and extension/outreach.  Research efforts are focused on discovery research to examine fundamental processes within the whole animal and to develop innovative beef production practices.  The on-farm teaching laboratory provides students the opportunity to learn and enhance skills in beef production practices, nutritional management, artificial insemination, embryo transfer, and forage management.

You can earn an Animal Science degree at MU while learning the biology and science underlying beef production, as well as gain valuable hands-on training in the important segments of the beef industry. This pre-professional program prepares you for a career in the beef industry.

FB Miller Reproductive Management Internship Program


Miller Internship

This internship provides provide students with practical training in the development and execution of estrous synchronization and AI programs.   Students gain extensive hands-on experience in estroussynchronization, estrus detection, semen handling, and AI.  In the past nine years, 100 students have participated in the F. B. Miller Internship.  Students in the program participated in hands-on reproductive management procedures on farms and ranches in IA, ID, IN, KY, MO, MT, NE, ND, OR, SD, and WY.  These students worked with approximately 135,000 heifers and cows on farms and ranches in the various states.
