Rodney D. Geisert became Director for the Division of Animal Science in the College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources on August 1, 2006. Dr. Geisert received a B.S. degree in 1976 and completed his M.S. degree in 1978 at the University of Nebraska. During his doctoral program at the University of Florida, he studied embryo and uterine development under the guidance of Dr. Fuller W. Bazer, receiving a PhD in 1982. Dr. Geisert joined the faculty of Oklahoma State University in 1982 and was promoted to professor in the Department of Animal Science in 1992. During his 24 years at Oklahoma State University, Dr. Geisert taught many undergraduate courses which include Introduction to Animal Science, Animal Reproduction, and Current Techniques in Biotechnology.
Dr. Geisert’s research career focused on elucidating the expression of genes involved with regulation of early conceptus development and uterine function in pigs. His laboratory defined the role of conceptus estrogen secretion in establishment and maintenance of pregnancy in the pig and investigated the cause of embryonic loss following exposure to exogenous estrogens during the first week of pregnancy.
Dr. Geisert has been on the Editorial Boards of Animal Science, Biology of Reproduction, Domestic Animal Endocrinology, Reproduction, and Reproductive Biology and Endocrinology. He is a member of Alpha Zeta, Sigma Xi, Gamma Sigma Delta, Phi Zeta, American Society of Animal Science, Society for the Study of Reproduction and Society of Reproduction and Fertility. He is a past president for the Oklahoma State University Chapter of Sigma Xi, served as the Society for the Study of Reproduction representative to the SPC committee of FASEB and chairman for the Public Affairs Committee. He was chairman of the International Organizing Committee for the VII International Conference on Pig Reproduction and served as panel manager for the 2005 USDA Competitive Research Grants in Animal Reproduction.
Dr. Geisert has trained over 20 graduate students in reproductive physiology. He has authored and co-authored more than 90 refereed journal publications, 14 book chapters and served as editor for three books. He has received numerous awards including the Southern Section ASAS Young Scientist Research Award, Oklahoma State University Sigma Xi Lecturer Award, Regents’ Distinguished Teaching Award, Oklahoma Instructional Technology Award and twice received the Alpha Zeta Outstanding Teacher Award from the OSU College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources. He received the 2005 Sarkey Foundation Elmo Baumann Award from the Division of Agriculture Sciences and Natural Resources at Oklahoma State University.
