
Equine Science Program
Majors and Minors
If you are interested in studying equine science at the University of Missouri there are a couple of options. Before choosing your path, it would probably be beneficial to sit down with an advisor and visit about your interests and what type of career you think you are interested in. Below are some options:
B.S. in Animal Science with Equine Emphasis:
Earn an animal science degree at MU while taking equine courses taught on campus. This program teaches the biology and science behind equine management, as well as provides multiple opportunities to gain valuable hands-on training in many different areas by utilizing horses in the MU breeding program.
Equine courses at MU include the following
- AS 2135 (Fall): Equine Selection & Evaluation
- AS 2085 (Fall): Equine Barn Management & Marketing
- AS 2095 (Fall): Equine Behavior &Training
- AS 4977 (Spring): Horse Production
- AS 4387 (Spring): Equine Breeding Management
- We also have summer volunteer and special problem opportunities working with young stock, reproduction, and general farm management

B.S. in Animal Science with minor in Equestrian Science:
The Equestrian Science Minor is offered through a partnership with Stephens College. This program is geared toward those who want to become a horse trainer, rider, teacher, equine event planner, horse show or stable manager, urban planners at trails and stable sites, therapeutic riding teachers, and judges and clinicians. Because of the number of available horses, enrollment in this program is limited and through application only. Preference is given to MU Animal Science majors, but all majors are encouraged to apply.
Required Courses (at least 21 hrs)
- 3 Riding Courses (either hunter, jumper, saddle seat, western, or dressage)
- Equine Management I and Equine Management II
- Stable Management and Horse Keeper
